Landlord Plays Santa

By December 12, 2012

Follow me on:

A landlord in Los Angeles, California has brought Christmas early to his tenants. Joel Berlinsky owns about 120 units in the city. He has granted each of his tenants a $70 reduction in rent for the month of December.

Berlinsky claims he has made the gesture every year for the last 15 years in the hopes that he can help his tenants purchase Christmas gifts for their children. With almost 120 units, this holiday gesture costs Berlinsky almost $8,500 in rent. I'd say that is a pretty generous gift.

There are so many stories out there about hostile landlord-tenant relationships that it is nice to see a good landlord-tenant relationship making news. Gestures such as these can go a long way in fostering goodwill and hopefully help keep tenants for longer periods of time. Smaller gestures such as sending holiday cards or holding a holiday raffle can have similar effects.
